It seems like an oxymoron: The manic uplift of coffee + the calm zen state of CBD.
Sure, opposites attract. As is clearly demonstrated by the CBD coffee craze that is sweeping cannabis-legal states. But will this coupling of coffee and CBD result in a clash-and-crash of what is likely an already fragile morning state?
Bonni Goldstein, MD, a California-based physician who specializes in cannabinoid therapy, is skeptical. Especially when it comes to proper dosage and the temperature of coffee.
She recommends that only individuals enjoying CBD for its daily wellness and mood enhancing benefits experiment with CBD-infused beverages. Because it’s hard to determine exact dosage, and temperature may affect CBD potency, if you’re using CBD to address a serious condition, you’ll want to chat with your doctor or naturopath before slathering those java beans with CBD oil. 😉
(Just kidding! If you do decide to try your hand at CBD-infused coffee, you’ll want to add the CBD oil or tincture to your brewed cup of coffee – not the pre-ground beans!)
On the other hand, we are seeing CBD cafes and coffee shops opening up in both the US and abroad. And cafe owners swear by the popularity of their CBD beverages. In fact, Ian Ford – owner of Caffeine Underground in Brooklyn, New York – says business is booming ever since he started selling CBD brews.
At the end of the day (or a long jittery work stint), the only way you can know if adding CBD to your coffee will work for you is to just go ahead and try it. Experimenters who have put it to the test so far seem to be fans. Many who have tried it say it won’t crash your system; and some even suggest it helps alleviate hangovers after an overactive night out.
Adding a serving of CBD to your morning coffee can help produce a clear focus and keep you alert – without the jitters. Ummmm… yes please!
Because caffeine affects everyone differently, the amount of CBD that gets you calm while crankin’ may vary depending on your own body. We recommend trying out a CBD-infused ground coffee or you can try adding a serving of your preferred CBD oil or tincture to your cup of joe.
A couple tips…
- Measure the total amount of CBD you want to ingest for the day and either spread it out across all your cups of coffee, or – if using a CBD oil or tincture – only add it to a single cup of coffee.
- Start with less. For those sensitive to the calming effects of CBD, it can make them feel sluggish or sleepy.
- Experiment with which cup of the day you make your CBD-infused coffee. For example, Melissa Malamut in New York found that first having a regular cup of coffee, followed by a CBD brew kept her calm and alert and jitter-free, compared to other sequences and combinations that left her either headachey or tired.
- Track your mood, focus and productivity for 5 to 7 days while you experiment with your coffee regimen to best understand what works best for you! Enjoy!
